Hello, Anarchists. Empty Hello, Anarchists.

Post by Mighty Tue Jun 08, 2010 11:52 am

Hey, everyone,

as you probably noticed, I have been away for a while. Work and family life has been hectic, but I wanted to stop for a minute and update everyone on my current status. I am currently running two small businesses and subcontracting for a third small business. I'm working 7 days a week while also juggling watching my kids and working on projects around the house. Business has been so slammed lately that I had to hire someone to take my phone calls and book my clients for me. I suppose the good news is that I can more than afford to play this game now, but I work so much that there is no way I will have time to come back and play within the foreseeable future. Even though I see it as a problem, it's a problem I welcome, and so I consider myself lucky to be in a bind like that.

I hope everyone is doing well, and I look forward to hearing from you guys in the future.

-Mighty.

The man, the myth, the legend. Glad to hear your businesses are doing well. I am currently looking for employment, although not looking very hard at the moment, I'm trying to enjoy being out of college and not having anything to do for as long as possible ha. Look forward to meeting you sometime or another and hope things continue to go well in RL

It's good to hear you're doing well. Try not to burn yourself out with those seven day workweeks.

In the meantime, we'll have to get Blkcell to redesign all the bases so they'll be perfect mirror images of what you're used to when you come back...

My understanding is that Blk has the big star now in Div 1, and that we aren't using all the bases anymore. Based on how much effort he's put into the group since he got here, I think it's fitting for him to have the big chair and do what he pleases with his base.

Regardless, they need to get their shit together and release it
already. I know that I personally ran out of steam waiting for it, and
eventually moved on with my life, and I know several other players in
the same boat. So it's a double-edged sword for the devs because if
they take too long in releasing it, they'll continue to lose players,
but if they push it too soon and release a lackluster expansion, which
even minutely falls short of the subscribers' expectations, they'll
lose even more players to games like Champions Online and ultimately DC
Universe Online.

I read an article recently which detailed how many CoX players are
moving over to Champions Online, and it made a list of all the
"exciting new updates" which CoX has been making which are really just
attempts to mirror the inovations made by Cryptic in Champions Online.
For an example, the new update for animated tail costume pieces;
multiple builds for a character's power selections (although CoX still
falls short because it only offers 2 builds and Champions offers
several more than that- the exact amount I can't recall); the graphics
update to create reflections on glass and water (ultimately, I think
CoX's verison looks nicer, but Champions had it first and Champion's
version doesn't require a system update for most players); custom power
coloring and animations; dual pistols and dual blades; even the new
update in CoX that allows you to fight your doppleganger is really just
a half-assed attempt to compete with Champion's Nemesis system, which
allows players to create an archvillain who will battle their hero
throughout his or her career (basically, make the Joker to your Batman)
and whether the villain is your exact doppleganger or your exact
opposite is up to you and your creativity.
There were several more examples in the article of CoX's constant
attempt to keep up with the innovations over at Champions, but what I
found even more disconcerting were all the innovations Champions has
made which CoX will probably never manage to impliment, such as open
zone missions, which saves a player from an ass-ton of loading screens;
custom framework for power selections (which is a huge draw for people
to change up playing CO instead of CoX); and probably the coolest
concept is one in which a player can change the role of his or her
character to fit different situations. As an example, if you find
yourself on a team which needs more damage, you can change the role of
your character to be more offensive at the cost of some of your
denfense and hit points (basically making you into a blaster-esque
character), or if your team needs someone to play more of a tank-like
role, you can change your settings on the fly to assume that posistion
as well. Depending on your style and what it is you want your character
to be capable of, it sounds like the average player will be capable of
performing at least 2 or 3 different roles, depending on how specific
they are about their power selections and how they handle their
enhancements. Even still, though, I suppose that a toon could
potentially perform any possible role in the game when you consider the
fact that a player can not only switch roles on the fly, but also
switch builds without having to bother running to talk to a trainer.
Also, the change in a character's role only causes an 8 second delay as
opposed to a 15 minute cool down. One of the other factors which I
found interesting is the ability of the player to interact with his or
her environment. If you are strong enough, you can lift cars, buses, or
whatever else you can get your hands on and either smash or throw the
object at a targeted enemy, and even the weakest of characters can at
least lift mailboxes, benches, and other smaller objects. I also found
it interesting that you can challenge other players to a PvP duel at
any time on any map, making it so that shit-talkers are always aware
that at any possible moment, I may just have to pimp slap you here and
now if you don't cut the bullshit. For players who like to duel, this
is also a nice development because you don't have to load into a
mini-map to avoid interferance from other players in open zones such as
an AS from some ass-clown stalker who turns and runs away after sucker
punching you. The PvP offered in Champions also offers mini games and
contests which offer rewards for successful completion, such as having
to survive wave after wave of oncoming enemies while protecting an
object. Ultimately, I think the strongest asset that Champions brings
to the table which CoX will never really manage to match is the fact
that Champions is much more action based, and the buildup of momentum
as you attack as opposed to the draining of energy makes it so that you
never find yourself standing around not attacking so that you can
prevent your toggles from dropping. You also obtain your travel power
at level 5, and have a much wider selection of travel powers and
effects for them, which makes the game more exciting and fast-paced,
especially when you consider that, if you have already completed the
tutorial, you can start a toon at level 5 by skipping the tutorial,
which allows you to actually start a new toon off with multiple attacks
and travel powers: no more running slowly across a long map as a lowbie
toon or running the sewers for the hundredth time to burn quickly
through your initial levels. The article also went on to describe
several attributes and innovations which DC Universe Online will have
when it finally manages to spring out the gate probably within a few
months of when Going Rogue will be released.
I remember when Champions Online was in it's beta, and I thought the
game was a poor effort to upstage CoX, but over time the devs over
there seem to have created a formidable oposition to CoX and any other
hero game which attempts to lay claim to a portion of the hero-MMO
market. In the end, I don't have much time for this kind of thing
anymore anyway, but I would say that once DCU Online comes out, that
the already dwindling number of subscribers to CoX will take an even
more drastic nose-dive, especially if CoX doesn't do a good enough job
creating publicity for Going Rogue and putting an ass ton of boxes on
shelves across America, which has never been their strong suit. My
prediction is that CoX will be going the way of Everlast within a year
at the most if they don't seriously play their cards right, and even
then it's probably still going to become a game which is only really
played by diehard veterans who can't bring themselves to let go. This is especially true when you consider the impact which the new Star Wars game will have on the market.

Many valid points for CO, I suppose. I stick around because it's my first love. I just found out about the new expansion pack coming out and the bioluminescence coloration. Perhaps, as you say, they're going to drop some smaller upgrade packs on us and extend the GR until Sept..? Who knows? I do know that ultimately, I'll still be here.

Oh, and the ass-clown stalker ass punching you, then walking away in PvP? Yeah. I got that. I tend to stay out of PvP areas, but I had to go in to hunt something for a defeat badge. I got too close to the ground and suddenly, I'm dead. I spin around and watch this guy do an amazing ninja disappear. I've never seen anyone disappear so perfectly. Ah well.

Lemme know how long that keeps you entertained... I think that CoX is a great game, and I had a blast playing it for three years, but I just don't see how they are going to fend off the competition when they aren't being innovative (with the exception of AE) and they don't do a good job putting ads out there and boxes on shelves.

Surprised to see ya here Mighty, but I TOTALLY understand your situation (rather than 3 jobs here, I have 2 "jobs" that are more life experience and non-paying). But I really like to see that post from ya. You're one of the few very knowledgeable ppl in CoX that really looks at other games unbiasedly and I respect that. After reading your post, I was with you in the 'beta' stage b/c I thought "oh wow, they're trying to bite off CoX and get a piece of that hero-mmo pie. losers" but after reading this from u I feel myself compelled to go try them out, especially since GR apparently isn't coming out this month (that was a total let down, cuz like you I'm running out of time and steam waiting for it). Unfortunately, unlike u I believe, they already have my money for GR cuz I wanted dual pistols and didn't think it was going to be pushed back this far. Oh well tho, you live and learn Wink, but given this downtime waiting for GR maybe I'll check out CO for a month or so (if I can detach from my 360 that long) and see what they have to offer. Thx for the info, and glad to see you back, even if not in-game Smile.

One of the other things I learned about CO is that their trial period lasts for as long as you want to play it, as opposed to the 14 day trial CoX offers, and it basically entails running the tutorial of CO with up to 2 characters. You won't obtain travel powers unless you buy the game, but that comes with your first month free and costs a total of $29.99. My understanding is that after you have bought the game and completed the tutorial, that all other toons from there on out have the option of skipping the tutorial and starting off at level 5 with a travel power and such.

I have also actually been considering giving the game a try, but have yet to do so because I know that the only way I will really be able to play will be to sacrifice sleep in order to free up enough time to play it. Decisions, decisions.....

So, who's planning on switching characters around?

Although I rarely get around to writing bios, most of my characters have just enough of a personality to them that I wouldn't really want to see the Heroes become Villains and vice versa. That said, the shades of gray would be a nice way to represent the villains that aren't quite up to the kinds of jobs you get from Westin Phipps.

It sounds like we'll be able to trade between Heroes and Villains, too. No more chuckling at the one hero on an all-villain team that needs a wakie...

Do you think SW: TOR is going to be a good game?

KoTOR was popular because it was full of Jedi, but it wasn't a particularly good game. The alignment system wasn't well implemented (most of the dialogue options were painful) and the combat engine was far from praiseworthy. As much as people like Jedi, I can't see an MMO surviving on that alone (SWG sure didn't).

I will always stick to this game here. Until one that comes that can offer the same customizasion or better. I don't know about you but trowing my hard earned money away on other games until there out in the market for at least 2 to 3 months is a waste of time. But hey what do I know right I've only been playing on line games since 1995 and bought my fare share of junk that went nowhere. That was before you had to pay a monthly fee I might add. EverQuest/ Ground control/ Home world/ just to name a few.

In short people save your hard earned cash. Wait and see what going to happen with all these so called new games. Is just going to be Hype and bells and whistles with no ball like most games are now a days. Or the real deal something new and creative to make you use that thing you call a brain . .

By my retort here you know where I stand .

To each there own .

Joining a game when it's brand new isn't always a bad thing. It's fun when you still have a chance of discovering something or coming up with a new trick or build.

That said, I'm not planning on going anywhere. City of Heroes really has a lot going for it. Every time another game's come out and I've gone over to play it, I've always drifted back to CoH. I'm not even a big fan of the superhero genre; I just love the game. Even if something new comes out that I'm interested in, I'll probably keep my CoH account up and pop in when I need a break. I just wish I had more time to play...

I also find myself coming back to CoH. Like Korzanis said, I am not that into comic books or the superhero genre, i just like the way the game plays. Until something amazing comes out...or until I get sick of waiting for new internet (last night i was farming AE and im glad nobody noticed cause we went through like 8 bosses where i was lagging so bad i couldnt attack). Whenever i find a job could also put a damper on things =(

Look, I've been playing video games since I was able to hold a controller. I can usually tell without playing a game how it may fair. Alot of the ones that have come out fail miserably. I knew CO was going to be teh suck. Star Trek was the same. Tabula Rasa I knew in five minutes that it wasn't going to be great. The controls and the lack of the ability to change them hurt it even further for me. Yes Knights was popular. SW:ToR is going to be different I think. I just want them to get on with the damned beta already so I can see how it may pan out BEFORE I have to spend the money on monthly fees. I planned on keeping my CoH account active because I do come back to it and play from time to time. It's just time for something new to come around to make me appreciate what CoH has to offer again. There were reasons why I played CoH so much, and it wasn't really because I loved the game that much. Somewhere along the lines I lost some of the appreciation for it. Good things are coming for our good ole CoH, I just need something else to show me why I do love this game.

That said, I'm getting a bit excited that it won't be much longer for the GR beta to start.
